A Belleville High School teacher calls out staff for wearing potentially offensive clothing, claiming it targets and intimidates Latino students fearing ICE raids. The school superintendent acknowledges the situation and promises internal action while emphasizing the importance of respect and open communication.
A teacher at Belleville High School took to social media to criticize what she described as an attempt to intimidate Latino students amid fears of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, following former President Donald Trump's threats. The teacher expressed in her post that the student body has been deeply affected, with students crying, and parents reluctant to send their children back to school for fear of ICE apprehension.
She stated that the situation was creating a hostile environment for these students. The teacher directly linked the incident to staff members wearing coordinated clothing with political messages that she believed were intended to intimidate and bully Latino students. School board President Gabrielle Bennett-Meany declined to comment, referring all inquiries to school Superintendent Nick Perrapato, who did not respond to repeated requests for an interview. However, Perrapato sent a letter to parents, staff, and the school community on Tuesday acknowledging a recent situation causing concern within the school community. He stated that the matter was being addressed internally, referring to a small group of staff members wearing coordinated clothing that some students and staff found offensive. Perrapato stated that the school understood the impact this had on various members of the community and that their concerns were taken seriously. While declining to provide specifics, citing privacy concerns, Perrapato assured that the matter would be handled according to district policies and procedures. He emphasized the importance of respectful conversations and encouraged students and staff to engage in thoughtful discourse. Perrapato also mentioned that school counselors would be available to provide support to any student in need. He concluded by reiterating the school's commitment to ensuring a positive learning environment for all
