Laguna Hills erases 20-point Bellarmine lead in second half, wins CIF 3-A state championship game at San Jose City College.
SAN JOSE – A Bellarmine College Prep football team that appeared to be sailing towards its first state title Saturday night was instead overpowered by Laguna Hills during a startling second half.
With Bellarmine leading 27-21, senior running back Troy Leigber, on 4th-and-2, took a handoff from quarterback Kaden Austin, got past the line of scrimmage, and ran 62 yards for a touchdown to tie the game with 7:00 remaining. “They just started making plays and we just didn’t respond,” Bells running back Ben Pfaff said. “We started off strong and felt good going into the half, but they came out firing.”
Quarterback Nate Escalada ran for two touchdowns, including one on a 47-yard keeper that gave the Bells a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Escalada also threw for two TDs, including a 40-yard strike to fellow senior Ben Pfaff shortly before halftime.Leigber, listed at 6-foot and 200 pounds, was a load to bring down all game and finished with 124 yards on 24 carries.
