“Apathy is always a dangerous sign for me. I know my mental health is slipping when I can’t be bothered to do anything. Trying to grout a bathroom is a sign that I’m still here, still keeping on”
We’re all enthusiastic amateurs now. The past couple of months has seen many of us casting around for things to do to keep ourselves distracted from the terrible news we see on the daily. What’s more soothing than mixing a bowl full of sugar, butter and, if you can find it, flour? Not much, it turns out, given how many people have made banana bread in recent weeks.
And that’s the reality with a lot of our current projects. We’re potting plants but forgetting to water them enough. We’re painting walls but speckling the carpet as we go. And don’t get me started on at-home beauty treatments. By now, I’m willing to bet that 60 per cent of Britons have done something reckless to their hair. And I’d put money on several painful waxing incidents and some bleeding cuticles, too.
In the nicest possible way, it’s very childish. We’re doing arts and crafts to keep our minds busy, to stave off the worry and boredom and to conjure up a sense of comfort and familiarity. Digging out an old set of watercolours and painting something vaguely crap, while watching a comedy I’ve seen 30 times before, isn’t so far removed from the potato prints I did as a child with my mum as a cartoon played in the background. Actually, I’d quite like to try potato printing as an adult, too.
