DUP Deputy Mayor calls opposers to conference 'Marxists'

Political parties at Belfast Council have clashed over attendance at a property conference in the south of France.

Government representatives, property groups, investors, construction firms and architects from around the world head to the South of France for MIPIM every year. The 2024 event was in March this year. Over 20,000 delegates from 90 countries attended the event. “Members should note that delivering on our Belfast Agenda ambitions requires a £7.5bn investment. This quantum of investment will require significant private sector funding and institutional investment, highlighting the importance of continued engagement and promotional activities with capital investment markets to positively position Belfast as an attractive investment location.”

“We don’t see what benefit we are getting out of it, and I think it has been difficult for officers to pinpoint it for us in the past. We will be minded to vote against this.” “The last time we went there was nothing tangible and there still is nothing tangible. Belfast should be open for business, but it is about who we do our business with. And the fear is we are going to lose the soul of this city.”

The Deputy Lord Mayor, DUP Councillor Andrew McCormick: “The Belfast Agenda requires £7.5 billion, and we are talking about not going to a conference where there are £4 trillion in assets to be tapped into, and where we can market Belfast in its greatest light. “No one is saying that we don’t need public and private sector investment. This is what is crucially needed, both public and private investment, with the public part of it actually leading.”
