Tools for Solidarity marked its 40th anniversary this year
A Belfast charity has been providing refurbished tools and skills based training to communities in East Africa for the last 40 years.
Read more: Why this Belfast's Children's Cancer Unit Health Play Specialist is taking part in the Stormont MileThe brothers initially worked closely with Tools for Self Reliance, who helped them to learn the skills needed to fix and repair tools, before setting off on their own once they had established themselves as an official charity with their first workshop at Edenderry Mill on the Crumlin Road in 1994.
Speaking to Belfast Live, Stephen said that the charity has three key goals that it aims to achieve; Helping to send tools and equipment to developing communities, promoting volunteer work and volunteering at all levels for people of all backgrounds and abilities and providing educational programmes that encourage sustainability and awareness of important issues such as climate change and its impact.
Stephen said: "We are very proud to see how Tools for Solidarity has grown over the past 40 years, from knocking on doors across Belfast collecting old tools to helping to train hundreds of people in disadvantaged communities to repair their own tools and equipment so they are able to start their own businesses and help their communities grow.
"The training centres we have established in Tanzania have now helped hundreds of people and provided them with the skills to help others in country and allow people to become more sustainable and grow their local economies. All the training that people receive there is completely free of charge, with accomodation included and some of the sucess stories from people there have been wonderful to hear.
