Colette Peters, head of Oregon’s prison system, has been named to lead the federal Bureau of Prisons, taking on the daunting task of fixing the troubled agency

WASHINGTON—Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday named Oregon’s top corrections official to run the beleaguered federal Bureau of Prisons, handing her the daunting task of setting right an agency that has struggled with misconduct, staffing shortages and the coronavirus pandemic.

Colette Peters led the Oregon Department of Corrections, a system of 14 prisons with 14,700 inmates, for the past decade. The federal agency she will lead starting in August is much larger, with more than 157,000 inmates in 122 facilities across the country and an $8 billion budget.
