The Master and Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 1
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most influential TV shows of all time, but in 2008, a five-part vampire TV show was released, and, even though it’s Buffy’s best replacement, it has become a forgotten TV show.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer arrived in 1997 and was a massive hit, thanks to its combination of horror, drama, fantasy, and comedy, as well as its strong female lead character. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ranks among the best TV shows of all time, and, as such, it has been highly influential in the genres of fantasy and horror TV shows. Unsurprisingly, there have been various TV shows that have tried to take Buffy’s place, and while they haven’t achieved that, they have succeeded on their own. Among those TV shows is Being Human, an underrated and mostly forgotten five-part British TV show that still stands as the show that can easily give Buffy the Vampire Slayer a run for its money. Being Human Is The Best Buffy The Vampire Slayer Replacement Created by Toby Whithouse, Being Human takes the audience to Bristol to meet John Mitchell and George Sands , friends and colleagues with a peculiarity: Mitchell is a vampire, and George is a werewolf. Mitchell and George move into a new home, where they have an unexpected roommate: Annie Sawyer , a ghost. Annie recently died in that house, so she’s now trapped there as a ghost. Together, Mitchell, George, and Annie do their best to live ordinary human lives, while also struggling with the specific problems of their individual conditions. Being Human aired on BBC Three in 2008 and stayed for five seasons, ending in 2013. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Being Human brings together classic monsters in a modern setting, with a perfect blend of comedy, horror, drama, and fantasy. Being Human is surprisingly deep, exploring themes like humanity, identity, family, guilt, and love, but without forgetting the horror elements that come with these “creatures.” While Being Human lacks some of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s elements, such as episodic mysteries and more supernatural creatures, this helps the show stand on its own feet, and it's not only the best Buffy replacement to date, but it’s also one of the most unfairly underrated fantasy horror shows in recent years. Why Being Human Became An Underrated Fantasy Horror Show Being Human had everything to be a hit fantasy horror show, but ultimately, it suffered the consequences of a couple of bad decisions. Being Human went through major cast changes starting in season 3, and by the time season 5 arrived, it had a completely new main cast that, unfortunately, didn’t quite connect with the audience. Being Human didn’t get a strong marketing campaign, and being produced by BBC Three and airing there as well inevitably gave it a label of lower-budget, edgy TV show that clashed with higher-budget modern productions. Ironically, one of the biggest strengths of Being Human ended up playing against it. Being Human had a proper ending, leaving no space for continuations, thus not becoming a franchise and stopping it from reaching a wider audience. On top of that, Being Human was directly impacted by its biggest competition: its American remake. Being Human Got An American Remake In 2011 Being Human was in its third season when it got an American remake. Also titled Being Human, the US version follows the same premise as the original show: a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living in the same house and trying to live human lives while figuring out their respective conditions. Being Human US starred Sam Witwer as vampire Aidan, Sam Huntington as werewolf Josh, and Meaghan Rath as ghost Sally, and it ran for four seasons on Syfy. Being Human US succeeded with critics, and one of its biggest strengths was that its main cast stayed for the show’s entire run. While both versions of Being Human are worth watching and each built a dedicated fanbase, the original show stands as the best and the one that could have taken Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s place in the 2000s after the latter's end, if only it had reached a wider audience.
