“He was covered in jewelry and was acting like he knew me forever,” recounts Lichi. “When we first met he shook my hand, which I was really taken aback by. It’s not customary for Middle Eastern royalty like this to stretch theirs hands. I thought, ‘Wow, this guy is really Americanized.’ He also didn’t great me in Arabic, which was unusual.”

But Gignac continued to delay the project. Still, the two became friends, and he would take her to dinner at Nobu, on drives in his Ferrari and sailing on Gignac’s yacht. He also threw her a birthday party at an Italian restaurant near the Fisher Island penthouse he was now renting.
