Almost a decade ago, the 2022 Olympian became the youngest to run marathons on all seven continents.
In December, the aerial skier made her first Olympic team in a sport that involves athletes launching themselves into the air from a jump and completing a series of twists and flips before landing at the bottom of a hill.
Vinecki picked up aerial skiing at 13, but she learned the importance of having a strong mental game through another sport—running. Winter Vinecki, who grew up running and racing triathlons, began aerial skiing at 13 years old. She’ll represent the U.S. at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. At 5 years old, Vinecki ran in her first race, and she hasn’t slowed down since. Growing up, she completed dozens of races and triathlons to fundraise for Team Winter, a nonprofit she created in 2008 to honor her dad who died of prostate cancer in 2009.
“As a kid, we never told her that anything was hard or there were any restrictions as far as how far you could run, or ride your bike, or swim,” Estelle said. “I think by not having any expectations and not having any restrictions on Winter at such a young age and all of her siblings, that’s what fostered the strong, athletic foundation.”In 2008, the family was hit with crushing news when Michael was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
