Samuel L. Jackson on the red carpet

When thinking of 2002, what's the first film that comes to mind? It was a year packed with critical darlings and blockbuster movies that defined franchises, like Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man, the second installment of Chris Columbus' Harry Potter series, Peter Jackson's epic sequel The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and the next chapter in George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy, Attack of the Clones.

Beyond that, an animation staple was born, or rather unfrozen, with the first Ice Age movie, and James Bond returned for its 20th outing, Die Another Day, the final spy adventure for Pierce Brosnan. Rising above them all, as far as awards were concerned, was the Best Picture-winning Chicago, led by Renée Zellweger. One film often not remembered from that year, however, is Changing Lanes, a legal thriller pairing Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson. The story shares some DNA with Netflix's Emmy-winning series Beef, following an attorney and a businessman whose rush-hour fender bender and the resulting road rage quickly evolves into an all-consuming feud that threatens to destroy both of their lives. With different methods at their disposal but the same goal in mind, they do everything they can to systematically ruin each other. Each goes to downright illegal lengths for the sake of petty revenge, culminating in an ending that forces them to confront the devastation their actions have wrought. Directed by Notting Hill helmer Robert Michell, the story of revenge and morality did reasonably well at the time, with a $94.9 million box office. Critics, however, were the most positive about the feature. It owns a Certified Fresh 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes and even received a perfect four-star score from Roger Ebert, who called it"one of the best movies of the year." Now, Peacock subscribers will be able to revisit this forgotten gem for themselves when it arrives on the platform on April 1. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Affleck Is Returning to the Director's Chair for His Next Project Affleck has already found some serious streaming success this year, thanks to his Netflix action thriller The Rip with Matt Damon, which garnered the biggest opening for one of the streamer's original films since Happy Gilmore 2. For his next big project, though, he's jumping back behind the camera. Production finally got underway last year on his long-gestating new Netflix film, Animals, which he'll also star in with Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Matt Gerald, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Steven Yeun. A date hasn't been set yet for its release, but it'll follow a mayoral candidate and his wife, with no option left but to spring into action when their son is kidnapped.
