Before the Highland Park, Illinois, parade shooting, federal law enforcement officials had again been on alert because of a 'heightened threat environment'
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last month detailed his concerns and his department released an assessment of some of the threats the U.S. was facing.
"We do expect that the threat environment is likely to become more dynamic as several high-profile events could be exploited to justify acts of violence against a range of possible targets," a DHS official told reporters on a conference call in June. Separately, the head of the FBI's Washington field office and the U.S. attorney for the district put out a recent joint statement that violence would not be tolerated after a man was arrested in the D.C. area forAlso last month, police in a small Idaho cityallegedly affiliated with a white nationalist group near a Pride parade.
