As a kid, Cat’s in the Cradle was a cautionary tale about a neglectful father. But as an adult, I recognise the feeling of being trapped in the system.
Every so often, my birthday falls on Father’s Day. If I were a better son growing up, this would have been a lovely way to bond with my dad. Instead, I always felt like he was stealing my thunder. After all, if it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t be a father at all. Now that I have become a father myself, I feel a little like those kids whose perfectly serviceable December 25 birthdays were ruined by some lousy messiah.
One of the hardest moments of fatherhood so far has been a well-worn cliche: my daughter grabbing my leg as I’m heading to work, tears in her eyes, and crying “Daddy, I don’t want you to go”. “It’s the cry of someone caught in a world that is moving beyond their control, who finally realises the value of time.”
