Big hearted beautician steps in for one night only to become Santa and save town's twinkling festive car tour

Lydia Upjohn, owner of Arch Rival Brows & Beauty in Billinge stepped into the big man’s boots for Skelmersdale’s popular ‘Christmas cars’ event which sees cars touring the town wrapped in thousands of fairy lights. The hotly anticipated highlight of the local calendar started two years ago with two cars covered in thousands of fairy lights touring the town to spread a bit of festival cheer during the darkest days of the pandemic.

The kind hearted 37-year-old told Lancs Live beforehand: “I’ve got my costume and my face paint and my wig, and I’m going to wear my dressing gown. Obviously James does it every year, he’s out all the time doing it so it’s nice to be able to do it and join him. Her husband, organiser and founder of community group Skem First James Upjohn, said the look on children’s faces was ‘priceless.’ He said: “The Upholland & Tawd Vale Lions have very kindly lent us their van so we can have a mobile grotto for Santa or Mrs Claus to meet the children in.

“Giving people a moment to sing along to the Christmas music, enjoy the Christmas lights and to see Santa is what it's all about. Those few minutes are brightening up some difficult times for some.”
