Rep. Dade Phelan resoundingly re-elected as Texas House Speaker, 143-3
Texas State Rep. Steve Allison, R-San Antonio, arrives on the house floor for the swearing in ceremony of the 88th Legislature at the State Capitol, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023.AUSTIN — Republican Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan was re-elected by his colleagues on Tuesday afternoon, receiving the full support of the Democrats in the chamber and defeating right-wing challenger Rep. Tony Tinderholt.
“For the newcomers here, words of caution — please do not confuse this body with the one in Washington, DC. After watching Congress attempt to function last week, I cannot imagine why some want Texas to be like D.C.,” Phelan said shortly after being sworn in. The Austin Republicans cast themselves along with the rogue Washington House Republicans of last week, who extracted concessions from McCarthy giving them significant power over what legislation reaches the floor.
Rep. Toni Rose, D-Dallas, said last term, during his first as speaker, Phelan supported her legislation designed to extend postpartum health benefits — despite the fact that the House and Senate differed in how far they wanted to go with the policy. Rose’s bill was ultimately passed and signed into law, but it was more limited than Rose wanted. The House, pushed by Rose, supported a year of health benefits after someone gives birth, but the Senate peeled the measure back to six months.
Patrick and Abbott have each announced their own legislative agendas, which overlap but are not identical.
