Bears head coach Matt Nagy strongly denied a report that claimed he had already been told he’s not coming back next season.
g suggesting Nagy had already been told Sunday’s game in Minnesota will be his last as the Bears’ head coach.
“I’ve been told that Matt Nagy has been told that he will not be retained,” WFAN’s Boomer Esiason said on his radio show Wednesday. “He’s been told. He knows he’s not coming back. That came to me through a very, very tight and good source.”“I'm a pretty good source to ask, so I think you're doing a good job of asking me. I would say anybody that has a report that is going to talk to somebody who talked to somebody who somebody, it's probably best to just call me up and ask me.
Nagy went on to say he expects normal exit meetings to occur Monday after the team gets back from Minneapolis and that will most likely be when he meets with ownership and the front office about his status. This isn’t the first time this season Nagy has had to deny a report like this. Before the Bears’ Thanksgiving game in Detroit, Nagy was left to deny a report from Patch.com that claimed he was informed the game against the Lions would be his last. The organization chose not to shoot down the report, which led to two days of turmoil within Halas Hall before chairman George McCaskey addressed the team to assure them Nagy would not be fired after the game.
Had the Bears already told Nagy he will not be retained, they could have been interviewing other head coaching candidates these past two weeks before the official end of the regular season.
