Eagle River resident describes a terrifying encounter she had with a mama brown bear and her two cubs while out hiking with her dog.
Bears are out of hibernation. There are hungry bears, mama bears with cubs, fish everywhere, and hikers eager to explore the outdoors during the short summer months.
Suzie Mauro, an avid hiker who lives in Eagle River describes the terrifying encounter she had with a mama brown bear and her two cubs while out hiking with her dog, Iggy. She and her dog were hiking on the trail and exploring the fauna when she stopped to put her jacket into her backpack. A few moments later, both Mauro and Iggy heard a rustle in the bushes and were met by not one, not two, but three brown bears.I grabbed my bear spray and I took it out of the holster and just got big and yelled,” said Mauro. “It continued towards me, and I sprayed, and she turned around the first time I sprayed, she kind of turned away from me, then she came back.
“It was by the book,” Mauro reflected. “In that split-second where I turned and I saw her, I didn’t think I was going to come out of it.”
