The Beachwood School Board is considering a proposal to build a wing for preschool to second grade students on the soon-to-be-built new Bryden Elementary School. The board is asking the community to give its input on the idea at a Dec. 5 meeting.
This Bryden School conceptual site plan shows a preschool addition added to the plan for a new Bryden School, planned for construction next year. The Beachwood School Board will ask residents for their input as to whether the preschool wing should be added.BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- The Beachwood Board of Education is evaluating a proposal that would integrate services now provided at the Fairmount Early Childhood Center at the soon-to-be-built, new Bryden Elementary School.
“We asked our design team to study this option a few weeks ago,” Superintendent Robert Hardis told the board at the Oct. 30 meeting. ”Specifically, we asked them to add six preschool classrooms, as well as a ‘large muscle room.’ This is a space where pre-schoolers gross motor skills are developed. Hardis further stated that adding a wing at Bryden would also simplify logistics for parents who would have but one location to pick up and drop off their children. He said that there would be slightly staggered start times for the preschool building compared to the rest of the school.
Hardis said that no specific uses have yet been decided the Fairmount building should the preschool wing be built at Bryden. Potential uses for the Fairmount building, however, might include staff training, testing, English as a second language and citizenship classes in association with Cuyahoga County Library, collaboration with the city of Beachwood’s Recreation Department, and meeting spaces for civic groups and organizations.
While several details would still have to be determined, Hardis said that, should the Bryden wing be added, no extra money would be needed to do what ever work would remain to be done at the Fairmount building.Board member Kim Allamby asked Hardis why the plans to add a wing were not considered before the entire project was brought to voters, who last year approved the money to pay for the new schools.
