A Beach Park man is facing kidnapping charges after driving to Ohio to meet a 12-year-old girl and then bringing her and two teenagers back to Illinois, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.
Police said Negron left Middletown, Ohio, around 10:30 p.m. Friday with the girl, her 14-year-old sister and a 15-year-old boy.
The parents of the girls contacted police at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday and said one of their daughters’ phones showed it to be in the Beach Park area. Police used that information in part to locate Negron and the Ford Mustang he drives. One of the kids also texted vehicle information to a parent.Authorities said Negron had been communicating with the 12-year-old for several weeks on social media before driving to Middletown on Jan. 18 and checking into a hotel.
Police said it is unclear what Negron’s intentions were. In addition to the kidnapping charge, Negron is also facing child endangerment charges, authorities said. “It is incredibly important to look at your children’s electronics to see what applications they are using, who they are communicating with, and what they are saying,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “I am so proud of my staff for working together to quickly locate and rescue these children.”
