High-profile oncologists don't always interpret clinical trials correctly. To understand new data, apply basic statistical principles yourself, says oncologist Bishal Gyawali, MD, PhD.
Welcome to conference season! The 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting is upon us, and the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress 2024 is just around the corner.
But"celebrity" status doesn't mean an oncologist is necessarily good at appraising evidence. Time and again, I have seen experts at these major meetings interpret trials incorrectly, remarks which then get propagated widely. But what it really means is that these experts don't know what they're talking about. It can be difficult to explain exactly what atell us anything about the magnitude of clinical benefit. The HR, CI, survival times, and Kaplan-Meier curves, among other measures, all tell us some aspect of the clinical benefit of a drug. But thevalue as implying a drug is very effective, the probability that the expert has real expertise interpreting clinical trials is significantly low.
