This is what you need to consider before pre-ordering the iPhone 17 Air. Is battery life a trade-off you’re happy to make for a slimmer phone? Apple wants you to think there is no compromise and you can have it all: a thin device with lasting power.The company says a combination of software efficiencies, the new A19 Pro processor, N1 wireless networking chip and C1X modem makes it the most “power-efficient iPhone ever made.” The redesigned internal chassis, too, has squished components together to make space for a decent-sized battery in the iPhone Air.This, Apple says, will result in 27 hours of offline video playback. That matches the iPhone 16 Pro’s quoted offline video playback figure. However, it is four hours more than the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro, and five hours more than the iPhone 13 Pro. For anyone upgrading from two or three generations ago, there should be a noticeable bump in battery life. If you believe Apple’s numbers, that is. Samsung, too, had the Edge’s video playback recorded at “up to” 24 hours. The actual day-to-day performance has left people unimpressed. Perhaps those three extra hours make all the difference in the Air, or maybe it is better to wait until the reviews land, or other, keener shoppers make the jump.There are some clues that Apple thinks you’ll be short-changed on battery, such as the new MagSafe battery pack that only fits the iPhone Air. The last MagSage battery pack was discontinued in 2023 and it was bought back, presumably, to make up for whatever the Air lacks. Also, compare how Apple talks around the Air’s battery life. “You’ll enjoy remarkable battery life all day long” versus how explicit it is about the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s battery prowess. Using phrases like “all-time high,” “best-ever iPhone battery life,” and breaking down precisely what you will be able to do with the device on a single charge. Samsung, too, talks around the Edge’s battery performance on its product page. Saying that the phone will provide “hours of entertainment.”For the iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge, the issue isn’t necessarily the size of the battery, but rather the premium features it is expected to power. Features that are typically reserved for Pro Max or Ultra models with bigger batteries. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge is the smartphone ghost of battery life future, which shouldn’t be ignored. The iPhone Air is an exciting new device in the Apple lineup that may use next-generation silicon carbon battery technology. But it is also aproduct. Version 1.
