All kids, not just kids who identify as the same gender they were born with, are legally allowed to participate in what schools offer their students, including sports.
The status of trans youth is the rallying cry some Republicans, Moms for Liberty and the ‘Take Back our Schools’ PAC uses to excite their evangelical base and galvanize the public against trans people.
Scientific America reports, “The notion of transgender girls having an unfair advantage comes the idea that testosterone causes physical changes such as an increase in muscle mass. But transgender girls are not the only girls with high testosterone levels. An estimated 10 percent of women have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which results in elevated testosterone levels. They are not banned from female sports.
At the last Mechanicsburg School Board, a transphobic resident requested MASD adopt a cruel policy specifically against transgender girls participating in girls’ sports. Transphobia can include fear, aversion, hatred, violence, or anger towards people who do not conform to social gender expectations.
