A new study in mice suggests that the protein B cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy muscle mass. Mice lacking BCL6 exhibited significantly reduced muscle mass and function, while increasing BCL6 levels reversed these losses. The research also indicates that fasting may reduce BCL6 levels in muscles, potentially contributing to muscle wasting. These findings could pave the way for therapies targeting BCL6 to combat muscle-wasting diseases.
A protein called B cell lymphoma 6 could be key to maintaining healthy muscle mass , and potentially could be used to combat muscle wasting conditions in humans, a study in mice suggests.Researchers used various strategies to identify the mechanism by which BCL6 helps maintain muscle, including mouse studies, muscle histology, cell culture, gene editing, gene expression analysis, data analyses, and various assays.
Increasing the expression of BCL6 in the animals’ muscles successfully reversed the losses in muscle mass and strength. A related experiment comparing normal mice with those that had fasted overnight found that fasting mice had less BCL6 in their muscles, supporting the role of BCL6 in controlling muscle maintenance.
The proposed pathway by which BCL6 controls muscle is the following: Fasting promotes the secretion of growth hormone, which reduces BCL6 levels in muscle cells; less BCL6 leads to less suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 because BCL6 regulates SOCS2 expression; this, in turn, slows insulin-like growth factor 1 production, causing muscles to become smaller and weaker.

Herpes Virus May Play a Role in Tau Protein Formation, Study SuggestsA new study published in the journal simplex virus 1 -- the virus behind oral herpes -- appears to trigger the appearance of tau protein in the brain, researchers say. They found greater amounts of HSV-1 proteins among tau tangles, the clotted twists of tau protein which are known as one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Doctors then created miniature cell models of human brains in Petri dishes, to study the effect of the virus on brain cells. The results indicated that an HSV-1 infection can affect levels of tau protein in the brain, with tau acting to protect nerve cells from dying as a result of the infection.

Popular Protein Powders May Contain Poisonous Levels of Lead and CadmiumA new report from the Clean Label Project reveals concerning levels of lead and cadmium in over-the-counter protein powders. The study, which analyzed 160 products from 70 top-selling brands, found plant-based, organic, and chocolate-flavored powders to have the highest concentrations of these heavy metals. The report warns that exposure to lead and cadmium can cause serious health problems, affecting the heart, kidneys, gut, brain, respiratory, and reproductive systems.
