BBC shared unused takes of David Tennant's emotional final line on Doctor Who in 2010, during the moment when his Tenth Doctor had to say goodbye.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The BBC releases unused takes of David Tennant’s final line from Doctor Who in 2010. Tennant’s tenure as the Tenth Doctor lasted across three seasons and numerous specials from 2005–2010. Tennant will soon return for the 60th anniversary specials as the Fourteenth Doctor before Doctor Who season 14 introduces Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.

According to Tennant and episode director Euros Lyn, the Doctor Who team tried four different takes of the last line “I don’t want to go.” According to Lyn, each take “pushed the emotion and the grief further.” Ranging from a more stoic rendition to a “full on breaking down” version, the Doctor Who team ultimately decided on the third version, a level below the most emotional take.

David Tennant’s 2010 Departure Moved Viewers Tennant expressed worry that if audiences see the Time Lord break down completely, it would stop the audience from fully engaging in the moment. The actor did not want his Tenth Doctor to “lose all that bravery in the final moment.” What results is a moment that is still heartfelt, with a wavering sadness in his voice, but one that still maintains a level of composure that is typical for the Doctor.

Even without the most emotional version, this Doctor Who moment left a huge impact at the time. Tennant is the most beloved, and arguably the best, of the Doctor Who revival era Time Lords. Tennant’s Tenth Doctor was not just expressing his own grief over his impending death, but reflecting the felt experience of viewers who, like the Time Lord himself, did not want to see him go.

Luckily for audiences, Tennant’s will soon embody another Time Lord as Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regeneration into a Fourteenth incarnation played by Tennant. Accompanied by Donna Noble actress Catherine Tate, Tennant will allow Doctor Who viewers to feel nostalgia for his bygone season before the series gets a new flair with Gatwa.
