BBC Asian Network radio boss Ahmed Hussain shared Frankie Boyle tweet calling Israel's military actions in Gaza 'genocide.' His tweets breached BBC social media 'due impartiality' rules
Asian Network radio station retweeted posts calling Israel’s retaliation in Gaza over the Hamas attacks “genocide”.
Hussain’s reposts appeared to breach the BBC’s new social media guidelines, which require “senior leaders” to follow the same strict neutrality rules as news journalists.questions about the posts, a BBC spokesperson said: “Our social media guidance sets out clear expectations for staff, including the particular responsibility for all senior leaders to uphold the BBC’s impartiality.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie has made “impartiality” across news a central feature of his leadership, telling staff if they want to become political activists they should not be working at the broadcaster. However the BBC has refused to bow to pressure from senior figures across the political spectrum to call Hamas – a proscribed terrorist group – “terrorists” in its news coverage. BBC guidelines say the broadcaster can let contributors use the term but its own news reports must not use “value-judgements” made by others.
