Scammers often create fake fundraising campaigns to collect money, preying on the emotions of grieving families and communities. The BBB urges people to carefully evaluate any fundraising requests and ensure that donations are directed to legitimate organizations.

“So many people unfortunately, they prey on victims and their families in a time like this, and it is so sad and it is so unnecessary,” said Vice President of the Better Business Bureau Monde Donaldson. “These people are grieving and yet people are raising money in their name when it is not for those families it is for that scammer.
Donaldson said this isn’t the first time they’ve heard of fake fundraisers like this being used to swindle people. She said scammers often use photos to make fundraisers appear more personal, but she wanted to remind us a photo alone doesn’t confirm an official connection.
