When author and activist James Baldwin visited Bayview-Hunters Point in 1963 to explore racism for KQED’s film “Take This Hammer,” he famously called the Black enclave “the San Francisco America pretends does not exist.”

For outsiders, it would be easy to bypass Bayview. But when Isaiah Powell, a food activist from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., first visited the neighborhood in 2019, he couldn’t look away.Powell and his life partner, Danielle Calibird Fernandez, founded a nonprofit called Dragonspunk, which works to reverse generations of neglect in Bayview. The nucleus is Calibird Pollinator Sanctuary and Food Forest at Palou Avenue and Dunshee Street, which they’ve stewarded since 2021.
