New Baylor Athletic Director Mack Rhoades answers questions during the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days at the Omni Dallas, July 16, 2016.Athletic director Mack Rhoades, who made two key hires to guide Baylor’s football resurgence and oversaw a men’s NCAA basketball title, has been rewarded with a 10-year contract extension.
Livingstone also acknowledged that Baylor’s performance had attracted interest from other schools, one reason for the decade-long extension, rare for an AD. Hired in 2016 in the wake of the sexual assault and violence investigation that brought down football coach Art Briles, Rhoades made two successful football coach hires in Matt Rhule and Dave Aranda. Despite some fan and media criticism, he backed men’s basketball coach Scott Drew, who delivered an NCAA title a year ago. During Rhoades’ tenure, Baylor has won 24 Big 12 titles and six national championships. The school has also planned a new basketball pavilion to replace the Ferrell Center.
