Bayern Munich has crashed out of the German Cup in a 2-1 loss to third-division Saarbruecken. It's also been left with concerns over an apparent leg injury to defender Matthijs de Ligt ahead of the weekend's “Klassiker” against Borussia Dortmund. Saarbruecken recovered from trailing 1-0 to win with a goal deep into stoppage time.
Saarbruecken’s Patrick Sontheimer, left, celebrates with teammates after scoring his side’s first goal of the game during the German Soccer Cup second round soccer match between FC Saarbruecken and Bayern Munich at the Ludwigspark Stadium in Saarbruecken, Germany, Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023.
Dutch defender de Ligt went off in the 24th minute. The only other specialist center backs in Bayern’s first-team squad are Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano, who has missed the last month with a hamstring injury. That meant midfielder Joshua Kimmich dropping back to partner Kim in defense.MATCHDAY: Manchester United faces Newcastle in League Cup in latest test for Ten Hag
