The roof of a Bay Area Big 5 Sporting Goods collapsed Tuesday after heavy rains swept through the region.
San Ramon Police Department/HandoutThe Big 5 in San Ramon’s Crow Canyon Commons shopping center buckled Tuesday morning, prompting a response from San Ramon police, firefighters, PG&E and city building inspectors. The collapse occurred before the store was open to customers.
“Early today, the roof collapsed at Big 5 on Crow Place,” San Ramon police tweeted at 9 a.m. Tuesday. “No injuries reported, however surrounding stores are also closed pending roof inspections.” The shopping center also has a Sprouts grocery store, a Rite Aid, an Ace Hardware, and a number of smaller stores and restaurants.that a central beam in the store broke, possibly under the additional weight of accumulated rainwater on the roof, bringing the ceiling down with it. According to Spedowfski, the store suffered even more water damage when the sprinkler system was activated.
SFGATE’s requests for comment from the city manager’s office and the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District were not answered by publication time. The San Ramon Police Department told SFGATE it had no additional information.
