A Bay Area News Group analysis of the data for the six-county Bay Area shows that Alameda and San Francisco counties trail the state, with 77% of courses taught by teachers qualified to teach the c…

Bay Area school districts lag behind the state when it comes to making sure kids have teachers who are highly qualified, and new data released this week shows that gap is even larger in some poorer districts such as Oakland Unified.

Rounding out the bottom, Oakland Unified was followed by San Francisco Unified with 77.3% qualified and Hayward Unified at 82.1%. Other Bay Area districts did better, with 88.2% of classes at Fremont Unified taught by fully qualified teachers, followed by San Ramon Valley Unified at 87.6% and Antioch Unified at 85.1%.

Oakland school leaders say they want the community to know they’re doing what they can to boost the number of credentialed teachers for their students with the resources they have. And they value the work of non-credentialed teachers, said Superintendent Kyra Johnson-Trammell. Ineffective — Teacher has no California credential at all, is teaching with an emergency permit or is teaching outside their credential area without authorization.Intern — Student teachers.
