The Bay Area still lost 53,000 residents in 2022, but that’s less than a third of the previous year’s loss, according to data released Thursday.

And the easing of pandemic restrictions last year paved the way for a 174% increase in migrants from other countries finding a new home in the region.

Part of the Bay Area’s slowing population drain is because fewer people left California for other states last year than the number who fled the year before. In 2022 there was a net drop in domestic migration of 122,000 people, down 36% from the loss of 192,000 residents in 2021. That hasn’t stopped international migrants from coming to California, playing an important role in stemming population loss.

“2022 was our highest-grossing year,” said Abdullah, who primarily works with people living in India trying to come to the U.S. Venessa Bohm, who works with the family aid division of San Francisco’s Central American Resource Center, said she is also seeing an influx of asylum seekers in search of food and housing assistance.
