“A heat event like this one is not especially common in our area.”
“It’s unusual, but this is also the first time we’ve had a sustained heat wave that’s predicted to last this long,” Burkhart said by phone. “It’s been quite a while since I remember the last one. Since this also straddles a holiday weekend, we know that the typical places people might go could be different with extreme heat. … We want to try and make sure people aren't out hiking with 3,000 acres of open space in 100 degrees.
The decision was made at the recommendation of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. Steve Hill, a public information officer for the fire protection district, told SFGATE that they strongly urged the operators of most of the county’s open spaces to close to the public for two reasons — to protect residents from the health risks that come with exposure to sweltering temperatures, in addition to the threat of “ultra high” fire danger.
“We have a slightly different circumstance in that we have large expanses of our county that will be hit hard by the heat, and they coincidentally happen to have a lot of open spaces and trails. A heat event like this one is not especially common in our area, and our residents are not acclimated to these temperatures. It’s our opinion that predicted conditions will unnecessarily expose the public and firefighters to undue risk out there in those open spaces,” Hill said.
“We often conduct challenging rescues in parklands on days where the temperatures are more typically in the 80s and 90s, and those are challenging enough for victims and firefighters. With multiple 100 degree plus days over this weekend, both potential victims and fire and EMS people will face much greater risks in those rescues.”San Francisco Chronicle/Hearst N/San Francisco Chronicle via Gett
The fire protection district also factored in the concern of fighting unnecessary fires, which could take away vital resources during other fires they may have to respond to over the weekend.
