The suspects face possible charges of robbery, grand theft, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and evading officers, police said.
Police arrested three adults and two teens from the Bay Area after security guards were assaulted during grab-and-run thefts of two North Bay beauty-products shops Monday night, and then the suspects led officers on a chase in a Range Rover stolen from Oakland.
The department said someone at Ulta Beauty in Petaluma had called around 7 p.m. to report five people filling large bags with fragrances. One suspect punched a security guard who tried to stop the theft, but the guard was uninjured, police said. As police departments across the region were getting a bulletin about the incident from Petaluma police, Santa Rosa police received a call from a Santa Rosa outlet of the Ulta Beauty chain about a similar theft, with descriptions of the perpetrators and vehicle matching the Petaluma incident, Petaluma police said.
The driver of the Range Rover turned onto a dead-end street, police said. “Unbeknownst to the suspect, who was from out of the area, there is no additional outlet in that neighborhood,” police said. The driver “appeared to intentionally ram an occupied marked Petaluma Police Department vehicle as it exited the neighborhood,” police alleged. “As a result of the collision the suspect vehicle’s front passengers side sustained heavy damage including a deflated tire.
