Each week, the Mercury News and East Bay Times highlight outstanding high school athletes from the Bay Area. Readers can vote for their favorite athlete from a list of nominees, contributing to the selection of the Athlete of the Week. This article features this week's nominees and details about the voting process.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections. Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at [email protected] junior goalkeeper had seven saves in a 1-0 victory over Northgate. Johnson had 26 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks in a victory over St. Ignatius. She followed that with a 24-point game against Oakland, where she also surpassed 100 career blocks. The senior made six 3-pointers and scored 20 points in a 54-48 victory over Branham. Kumagai ended the week averaging eight points per game for a team that was 12-5. The sophomore scored four goals in an 8-1 victory over Vallejo in league play. She had a three-goal game against Tennyson in December. The senior had one goal and one assist in a 6-0 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame. The result helped snap a five-game skid for the Wolverines. The sophomore made the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against Sacred Heart Prep to cap a 39-point night. She followed that by scoring 19 points and dishing seven assists in a victory over Foothill
