Only one chef from the Bay Area took home a James Beard medal last night.

One thing was quite different this year for the Bay Area, though — an unusually low number of nominees. In the last six years, the Bay Area has increased its number of nominees from 10 in 2016, to 17 in 2020. This year, though, a year where the “regional categories were … shuffled in order to recognize more chefs,” the Bay Area only had seven nominees.
