Consumer prices in the Bay Area jumped at their highest rate in more than 20 years, a forbidding increase fueled by a surge in a wide range of costs, the government reported Thursday.
Bay Area consumer prices are skyrocketing at their fastest pace in more than 20 years, a grim new report revealed Thursday, slamming shoppers at the grocery store and drivers at the gas pump.
Nationwide, the inflation rate was an eye-popping 7.9%, the biggest rise for consumer prices since 1982. “Every time you check out at the grocery store you notice it. Everything is more expensive,” said Jonathan Ortiz, a San Jose resident. “Meat, food, it’s all costing more.” Ominously, the inflation report didn’t capture the spike in gasoline prices that has erupted in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, because the government’s survey of consumer costs occurred last month.
A national Bloomberg survey “shows that the foot traffic at retail stores has already dropped 5.6% from a year ago,” Sohn said.Bay Area food prices zoomed higher by 9%, led by a mammoth increase of 10.7% for meat, poultry, fish and eggs, and a jump of 13.7% for cereal and bakery products. Sim Sangha, a Fremont resident, said she recently bought an electric vehicle, which will ward off the jump in gasoline prices. Sangha conceded, however, that there’s no escaping the cost of groceries.
