, whose roots stretch back to the mid-19th century, has filed to reorganize its finances under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, according to court records.
In 2019, Books Inc. generated revenue of $20.9 million, a court filing showed. The retail chain’s revenue totaled $18.9 million in 2023, marking at that time three consecutive years of rising sales after revenue collapsed in 2020 to just $11.3 million, according to court documents. Books Inc.’s 11 retail sites are all in the Bay Area. They include three stores in San Francisco, and two at San Francisco Airport. The company also has a presence in Alameda, Berkeley, San Leandro, Campbell, Mountain View and Palo Alto, its website states.
