The Bay Area is experiencing its worst air quality since eerie orange skies blanketed the region nearly three years ago, according to officials.
The air became unhealthy for all groups later that day — and experts expect it to remain so through the end of the week. The district expects the smoke to linger near the surface into Friday but couldn’t predict whether or not conditions would remain heightened into the weekend or beyond. The smoke currently drifting along the coast and into San Francisco Bay is from around a half-dozen blazes, most of which have been actively burning since mid-August along the northern edge of California. The largest is the Smith River Complex, which has scorched nearly 93,000 acres in Del Norte County. The fire, which was 77% contained as of Tuesday morning, is the second largest in the state this year, according to Cal Fire.
