The hatches are battened and moving day for the Battleship Texas is set for Aug. 31, provided the gulf’s unpredictable weather does not intercede.
“This date is based on the optimal tides and currents at San Jacinto and Galveston to facilitate the safe movement of the ship,” foundation officials said. “The date is subject to change on short notice, perhaps even the morning of the tow, based on parameters that could affect a successful and safe departure.
Because Trinity Bay and Galveston Bay are lined with private businesses, including Port Houston, viewing locations could be crowded and limited. Foundation officials said they expect public gatherings at Bayland Island, Texas City Dike, Pier 21 and Seawolf Park., a class of warship built prior to World War I. The ships were the military titans of the ocean until warfare changed and aircraft carriers took precedence.
The ship was retrofitted for action in World War II, including being the first U.S. ship mounted with an array of anti-aircraft guns The ship participated in the Normandy invasion during D-Day, firing on Nazi-held positions as troops landed on the beaches. The ship was decommissioned in 1948 and became a museum fixture along the Gulf Coast. Its age and decades of sitting in the sea have taken their toll. Over the past decade, the foundation has addressed leaking and other issues as it worked to rehab as much of the ship as possible.
The $35 million project to maintain the ship will continue in Galveston, where the vessel will undergo crucial subsea repairs over two years, sitting in a mobile dry dock.
