Tshwane is racing against time to elect a new mayor as opposition parties threaten to take the speaker to court over the adjournment of a special council sitting.

PRETORIA - Multi-party coalition partners in Tshwane say they’ll challenge the Speaker’s decision to adjourn Monday’s special council meeting in court. The meeting had been called by the city manager to debate a no-confidence motion in Speaker Mcendi Ndzwanana.Ndzwanana says some of the signatures on the petition that called for his removal were questionable.The ANC says it’s ready to battle it out in court.On Tuesday, a council meeting will sit to elect the mayor.
Failure to do so will place Tshwane in a precarious situation, as it’s rushing against the April 14 deadline of the Provincial Treasury to pass the mid-term budget adjustment and the 2023/24 budget.
