Zippy, the smallest autonomous bipedal robot ever, walks at 10 leg lengths per second and fits into spaces other robots can’t.

Bipedal robots aren’t just human-shaped machines with arms and legs. At the cutting edge of robotics, they can also take the form of tiny, power-packed marvels.Meet “Zippy,” a palm-sized, two-legged robot that’s breaking records in both size and speed, all while offering potential applications far beyond its toy-like appearance.Developed as part of a National Science Foundation-funded project at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering, Zippy stands less than 1.

”Record-breaking performanceZippy’s most astonishing feat is its speed. The robot can walk at a rate of 10 leg lengths per second. When scaled to human proportions, it equals an adult walking 19 miles per hour.“Both Zippy’s small size and our mechanical adjustments enable Zippy to walk at an incredible 10 leg lengths per second, which would be equivalent to an average adult moving at 19 miles per hour,” said Bergbreiter.
