Batsheva Hay shares her new sepia-hued collection of photographs, titled “Enjoy Your Soul,” which were shot by her husband, photographer Alexei Hay.
You can’t miss a dress designed by Batsheva Hay: They come with high necks, pert collars, and ruffles on the cuffs. There’s been a prairie dress, and most recently, her buzzy, fit-for-COVID-19 house dress. The aesthetic has become such a trend that if you look up “Batsheva dress” on Google, there aren’t even Batsheva dresses but other labels similar to the frocks. Same with eBay and so on. Sometimes, people simply refer to it as a “Batsheva.
The chic-dowdy styles are certainly popular, worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Diana Silvers. But the fluff and the frill has always had a layered meaning. Hay is an observant Jew and abides by Judaism’s laws of modesty known as. This past week Hay released a set of photographs in which she is observing age-old Jewish traditions, such as lighting Shabbat candles and praying while closing her eyes, and reading a Tehillim book, a collection of psalms.
The Jewish theme in the images is readily apparent and goes deeper than just serving as an aesthetic inspiration. “We were reading about this exploration in Judaism and the significance of clothing and what it is supposed to mean. All of our emotional and spiritual components are described as garments in Judaism,” says Hay. “We were like, ‘We should create this world and these images around these spiritual garments,’” she says.
While there are themes of Judaism in the images, they also convey the feeling of clothing and spirituality, regardless of religion, that is universally relatable. “We wanted to pick poses or looks or moods that felt like they applied to everyone or were universal. There is a lot of closing eyes, covering eyes, and that this woman is taking something bigger in,” she says. “It’s not about fashion, it’s about something deeper than that.
