Batman '89 almost introduced a new version of Harley Quinn, now the persona of a seemingly-deceased character from 1989's Batman movie.

The Batman ’89 comic series continued the story of Tim Burton’s Batman and introduced new characters to its canon, but it very nearly introduced a significantly different iteration of Harley Quinn as well. The Tim Burton Batman duology is part of two timelines, with one succeeding Batman Returns with Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin and the other continuing in the Batman ’89 comics and the DCEU movie The Flash.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT There were numerous proposals for a comic continuation of Tim Burton’s Batman movies before Joe Quinones and Sam Hamm’s phenomenal Batman ’89 was finally greenlit and later published in 2021.

Alicia Hunt would make a lot of sense as the potential leader of the remnants of the Joker and Carl Grissom’s crime syndicate. As his former girlfriend, Alicia was closer to the Joker than anyone else for a time and the trauma following her horrific disfigurement may make her cruel and unpredictable enough to become a major threat to Gotham with the Joker’s resources at her disposal.

While this fascinating new version of Harley Quinn never made it to the final version of Batman ’89, the Tim Burton universe does seem to be setting up an iteration of the famous Clown Princess. A psychologist referred to as “Dr. Q” appears on television in Batman ’89, and her appearance strongly suggests that she is indeed Harleen Quinzel.
