Intensive care nurses at Bassetlaw Hospital are poised to strike over allegations that the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) is being phased out. The Unite union claims the hospital trust is attempting to transfer staff to Doncaster Royal Infirmary for extended periods, potentially causing significant hardship and burnout. The trust insists the changes are necessary to ensure high-quality care for patients.

Intensive care nurses at Bassetlaw Hospital in Nottinghamshire are threatening strike action over claims that the intensive care unit ( ICU ) is being gradually closed down. The Unite union alleges that the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH) is attempting to transfer staff to Doncaster Royal Infirmary for at least two months a year, potentially extending to four months.

Unite argues that this would add a significant strain on nurses, extending their daily commute by at least an hour and a half for those driving and three hours for public transport users, leading to potential burnout. The union also claims that the DBTH is threatening to dismiss and rehire nurses on new contracts, obligating them to work part-time at Doncaster if they refuse to transfer voluntarily. Unite reports that four staff members have already left Bassetlaw's ICU for other units. The DBTH, however, insists that the change is necessary to ensure the highest quality care for patients. They state that Bassetlaw's ICU handles fewer critically ill patients compared to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, resulting in a wider range of complex cases managed by Doncaster's clinicians. The trust argues that rotating ICU staff across both sites guarantees they maintain the necessary skills and experience to provide safe and effective care. They emphasize that the Doncaster transfer will involve no more than eight weeks a year and highlight a recent £30 million investment in a new emergency care village at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, consolidating A&E, paediatric services, and an adult inpatient and assessment ward. Despite this, Unite maintains that strike action dates will be scheduled in the coming weeks if the trust does not reconsider its plans.
