STATE CHAMPIONS | After a long, lightning-delayed night of lacrosse, BTgirlsLAX captured its second state championship in a thriller over Vero Beach.
Both clubs had key players out of action for that game but each team was the best version of themselves and provided a thriller of a game that was threatened to not be completed Saturday.
To make matters worse for Bartram Trail, they committed a foul on the goal already down a man and had to weather the storm to keep the game tied. "I was cutting through the 8-meter and had a little bit of a lane and I beat my defender and got fouled," DiFato said."Getting that free position, all I was thinking in my head was, 'Jesus, give me strength and help me pull through for my team.'"
DiFato's face-off win was critical but Vero Beach had a chance to corral a loose ball deep in their end with 30 seconds to go. Bartram Trail senior Leyton Payne, who missed the end of the year last year with an ACL injury, was the one who controlled the ground ball, and fellow senior Marina Dean ran the clock out for the Bears.During the regular season, the Bears took a trip down south playing three games in three days against state powers Delray Beach American Heritage, Pine Crest and St.
"That was our gauntlet we played this season and the delay for the St. Thomas game, the girls were pretty drained and weren't playing well but the delay was the best thing," Jackowiak said."We regrouped, got hyped up and had fun in the locker room it was the same thing tonight. It was a longer delay but the girls calmed down, let their guard down and were singing and dancing. I reminded them to just breathe and come out the way they needed to.
