According to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, Illinois leads the country in confirmed tornadoes for 2026, with 141 confirmed tornadoes. While Monday in the Chicago area will be sunny and dry, more severe weather chances will"move right back in" starting Tuesday, the The first chance for rain comes Tuesday morning, NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, with spotty showers possible. By afternoon, some isolated storms could form, though not all areas will see them. The strongest storms, between about 2 to 7 p.m., could contain heavy rain, damaging wind and large hail.
"The greatest coverage of storms will be generally east of the I-39 corridor," the National Weather Service said in a post on X. According to the Storm Prediction Center, much of the Chicago area Tuesday will be at a"marginal" risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five. Wednesday brings a greater chance for strong to severe storms to the entire Chicago area, Roman said, with rain and storms starting as early as mid to late morning.
"All weather hazards will be at play, including tornadoes," Roman said, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center placed Chicago and counties to the north and west at a"slight" risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two. Counties to the far south will be at an"enhanced" risk of severe weather, which ranks as level three.
"The strongest activity will remain in central Illinois," Roman said. "We'll have to watch the timing of this. We'll also have to watch the placement. "
