We will see what season four brings, but it’s hard for me to imagine still getting the same kind of comedic elements from characters like Gene and Sally. And I go in, and Bill or Alec then take me from where I am to where they have a vision of where I should be. It is as if I am in Peru and they would like me in Bangladesh. And my job is I'm going to strap myself in and buy a ticket and go for the ride.
He’s so good and so intense that I wouldn’t have blamed you if you were sweating like Gene was opposite Jim in episode 7. What was it like filming that? I'll tell you what he said to me: "Gene was quite an actor, huh?" That whole episode, Gene shows that he was quite an actor. "Don't go in there! Don't go in there! He knows everything! Oh, no, you're going to be hurt!" We shot it a few ways, and what was left was, my face was satisfied. Now, I would have to say, thinking about it with you, I think that there is some sort of sadness because he did become the son I never had—even though I had a son.
I was struck by the finale ending with that dialogue-free sequence. The police leave; Jim leaves; the camera lingers from a distance on Jim, a supporting character we just recently met. What did you appreciate about that unspoken final moment between these two men that shared a love for the same woman?
