Lawyers fear defendants will plead guilty to crimes without representation during strike ➡️ The nationwide strike, only the second in the history of the CBA, brought the justice system to a virtual standstill
A striking barrister has expressed fears that defendants could be allowed to plead guilty without proper representation during their mass walkout.brought the justice system to a virtual standstill as hundreds of self-employed lawyers joined picket lines outside courts across the country on Monday.
The jury will return on Wednesday but a further three days of action are due to take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Judge Dean told the 34-year-old man from Salford that the hearing, to discuss a trial due to start in September involving at least 12 other defendants, would continue because the legal matters being discussed were not “contentious”.
“I think that will probably have to happen,” she said, citing the pressure the courts are under due to a backlog of trials, preserving court dates, and custody time limits on how long defendants can stay in prison ahead of a trial. Downing Street has angered striking barristers by claiming that they are refusing an offer of a 15 per cent pay rise.
