The historic downtown terminal, purchased by Playhouse Square in 2024, will be replaced by a new 2,100-square-foot facility near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The city’s Greyhound and Barons bus operations will move from their historic downtown terminal to a new, modest facility in Brook Park next month.Cindi Szymanski, communications director for Playhouse Square, said the cultural organization will initially use the property for valet operations and parking for buses bringing students and other groups to performances.

“We will share long-term plans for the property at a later date,” she said. “There are a number of possible utilizations for the space currently under consideration, all which respect the architecture of the building.”, Playhouse Square officials have said they envision the property becoming an entertainment venue, an expansion of the organization’s growing cultural district. The structure, built in the late 1940s, is a Streamline Moderne landmark, known for its striking geometric architecture and curving walls. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Since the building was sold, city and transit officials have struggled to find a suitable relocation site for intercity bus travelers.– a local company that works in partnership with Greyhound – sought locations in downtown Cleveland, including at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center on E. 22Instead, the bus hub will move to a new building on the grounds of the Brookpark Rapid Station in Brook Park, just north of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Barons Bus Lines recently completed construction of a 2,100-square-foot brick station in the parking lot of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority property. The facility includes restrooms, ticketing space and a waiting area for passengers. The relocation reflects a national trend as intercity bus terminals — often located on valuable downtown land — are sold for redevelopment. The shift accelerated in 2021, when Greyhound’s former owner, Scotland-based FirstGroup, sold the company and separated the bus service from its real estate holdings. Greyhound is now owned and operated by Germany-based FlixBus, which transportation experts say does not maintain a business model that includes owning or operating large terminals. In recent years, downtown bus terminals have been sold in Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland, as well as in Tampa, Florida; Richmond, Virginia and elsewhere. In Cincinnati, Barons and Greyhound operate out of a small station about 12 miles north of downtown. In Columbus, intercity passengers are picked up at several spots in the city, including downtown and on the Ohio State University campus.Susan Glaser has been travel editor and chief travel writer for The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com since 2008.
