. "It would be one thing if these were reimaginings of the classics, written by POC. But just repackaged books in false advertising? Oof," one person commented. "Try promoting books featuring an actual POC and written by a POC instead of this," another Instagram follower noted. "Redesigning the cover doesn’t make it diverse."
The comments have apparently gotten through to Barnes & Noble, because the company announced this afternoon that it's not proceeding with the plan, and that it has canceled a celebratory launch for the titles planned for Wednesday evening. "We acknowledge the voices who have expressed concerns about the Diverse Editions project at out Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue store and have decided to suspend the initiative," B&N wrote in a statement. "Diverse Editions presented new covers of classic books through a series of limited-edition jackets, designed by artists hailing from different ethnicities and backgrounds.
